What EXIF data is
Every photo taken on a phone or digital camera carries hidden metadata alongside the image itself, in a format called EXIF. This records the technical circumstances of the shot — the camera model, the exposure settings, the date and time — and, critically, often the exact GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken.
None of this is visible when you look at the picture, which is exactly why it matters. People share photos without realising what travels with them.
The privacy problem, stated plainly
The GPS coordinates in a photo's metadata are precise, often to within a few metres. A photo taken at home and posted online can therefore broadcast your home address to anyone who knows how to read the data, which is trivial. Photos of children in a garden, a car outside a house, an item for sale in a living room — all can silently reveal exactly where they were taken.
This is not hypothetical. Location data in shared photos has been used to locate people who believed they were anonymous, to identify homes for burglary, and to compromise the safety of people with genuine reasons to hide their whereabouts. It is one of the most consequential and least understood privacy risks in everyday digital life.
What social platforms do, and do not do
Most major social networks strip EXIF data when you upload, which offers some protection — but this is inconsistent and cannot be relied upon. Photos shared by email, messaging apps, cloud links, or uploaded to smaller sites frequently retain their full metadata. Sending an original photo file to someone, rather than a platform-processed version, almost always includes everything.
